Insights in Yoga Therapy – A 6-Day Immersion with Stephen Thomas & Anya Porter
This immersion will present practices and theory on how the traditions of Hatha Yoga can be evolved and personalized for the student (which include the deep therapeutic well of physical Asanas, cleansing Kriyas, Pranayamas, Meditation and Mantra).
We will also look at Yoga off the mat. Since therapy begins in the mind and lifestyle, a daily study of text and philosophy from the classical Yoga and Buddhist traditions will form the background of the course.
The course is focused on the personalized therapeutic approach of Yoga and includes:
Skillful application of alignment pathways and specific, detailed use of props for creating long-held, releasing, restorative forms of the Asana as well as allowing greater understanding and stability in the dynamic Asana forms.
Tools for unlocking blocked spaces by looking at Yoga through the koshas (the layers of mental, energetic and physical). This includes Asana, Kriya, Mantra, and Mudra.
Development and refinement of the subtle practices in the seat. A deeper dive into Pranayama, cleansing Kriyas, and Meditation. Special attention will be given to developing the various classic forms of Kumbhaka and Bandha. How and when to use these techniques and how to teach or practice safely!
Personal responsibility as a student and practitioner. Self-care as well as personal, environmental and societal integrity through expansion and evolution of the practice.
Tools for better inner-listening; cultivation of the inner-teacher/guide through development of curiosity, clear-seeing and discernment.
Personal and group discussion/work with shadows, maitri (metta) and the ability to find ease within.
There will be clear direction offered in the way of modification and balance of the practices to match the needs of each student, creating space and possibility for personal evolution.
Each day builds progressively on the last. The program will look at the practices in a holistic way including reviewing some philosophical perspectives from both the Classical Yoga systems, Buddhist approach and the Modern Hatha sytems to better focus and direct our lives on and off the mat.
